The most eagerly anticipated dance album release of the year is finally here! After last year’s game-changing ‘Record of the Year’ anthem (RA/Groove/Mixmag) ‘Without You’, Art Department release their debut album and it’s truly amazing!
The haunting, yet lucid and melancholic house of Art Department is reminiscent of early Chicago house through a 21st century paradigm. The music is emotive and beguiling, whilst being something truly original and inspirational. The album features collaborations with Osunlade, Seth Troxler and Soul Clap who all contribute to make the album the colourful tapestry it is. While they visibly pay homage to generational influences, from early Chicago house classics to quintessential hip-hop and Disco, they manage to create a truly unique formula for themselves.

The Eleven is - numerologically speaking- definitely not a lucky number in the Western culture. It exceeds perfection just by one and thus represents the number of excess and sin in Christian mythology; that’s why apocalyptic events always start in the eleventh hour. However, those who followed the output of the most successful German label for electronic dance music since 2000 to date are aware of the fact that Cocoon’s aim is rather the further development of sound instead of sticking to nostalgia, or portentous “Omen”. Against this background, it may be a temporal coincidence but also totally logical that, on the occasion of the eleventh anniversary, this compilation breaks with traditions which people have come to like. So, the focus of CD 1 does not lie in celebrating only the “best of” tracks, but rather in nine tracks from the past six years which have, without doubt, made some impact on clubs and dancefloors worldwide, but whose stories have not been musically “told” so far. It all begins with Chile-born Alejandra Iglesias aka Dinky, whose “Acid In My Fridge” from the Cocoon Compilation D in 2004 has ultimately taken her into the top league of producers. Lee Curtiss, Ryan Crosson, Seth Troxler and Shaun Reeves - the Michigan collective Visionquest - turns the musical masterpiece into a marvel of fragmented Dub Techno in a Breakbeat disguise, where the 303 takes over the controls again in the end anyway. Subsequently, Toronto’s SCI + TEC ambassador Carlo Lio is pumping a maximum of distortion in Dubfire/Huntemann’s “Diablo”, while Amsterdam’s Detroit resident Steve Rachmad brilliantly purges Joel Mull’s club hit “Harmonautic String” of 2007, and the Scottish “Consumed” producer Gary Beck unfolds presumably the mightiest bass on this CD. Actually, there are still many things to say about each title on this CD, showing such great coalitions of Guy Gerber and Kollektiv Turmstraße, Roman Flügel and Martin Buttrich, Tim Green and Argy resp. Paul Ritch and 2000.

The Swiss space - cowboys, DS & TH bringing back their fourth album of superlative dub inna sci-fi control. Last time they choosed a strange combination of cheap 80´s songs and monumetal rock standards for student parties….! This time the clashification of dub is wrapped by the most influencial band of revolution, pop, rock, punk, politics and dancing over the last 30 years: THE CLASH. Meet the clash hits (almost all of them…) like Guns of Brixton, London Calling etc. (check the tracklisting of the CD and vinyl below) – the compact crossover of sweet and lovely reggae vibe (natural … obviously were it comes from) with scifi tech power - partly orchestrated with innovative productions and mixing skills. An album of increadible beauty and power… smart and contemporary DUB…! Dub Spencer & Trance Hill´s vision of cult is unique; it is alchemy, prophecy, acoustic ecology in a magical timeless atmosphere…!

Four years after his debut on the Brooklyn label Wolf + Lamb, and the much lauded follow up >Time for Us<, whose glacial slow-jam take on house sent journalists scrambling for adjectives, the 20 year old New Yorker by way of Chile returns to Circus Company with Space is Only Noise, an uncompromising manifesto on traces of the past, love lost, and specters of the future!

Howdy! Four years after the last Console release “Mono” it’s time for some new vivid life signs of the famous Weilheim based collective. This time the new album titled “Herself” is a bit more of a solo attempt. Due to mastermind Martin Gretschmann’s always packed calendar it’s no surprise that first drafts of „Herself“ came to life on his laptop whilst on tour with The Notwist. The final recordings then took place in his studio together with singer Miriam Osterrieder and a bunch of electronic toys. Martin Gretschmann can be called - in best sense - a creative factotum: The Notwist’s electronic wizard since 1997, as well as member of the allstar combo 13&God (a collaboration of The Notwist and the Anticon HipHoppers of Themselves). Under his alter ego Acid Pauli he does not only perform extraordinary club sets but – thinking of tracks like „Billy The Killy“ and „I See A Darkness“ – he also brought some humour onto the minimal dancefloor. “Anything goes“ – a maxim sometimes also showing up in his never ending eagerness to experiment, e.g. playing electronic music live on stage via Wii controllers. Over the years Console – in coop with Andreas Ammer - has also discovered another interesting playground: the radio play. „Herself“ is not a born-and-bred ambient album, but bristles with bright pop appeal. Gretschmann, the alchemist, synthesizes beats, sounds and samples creating melodies and atmospheres which take unpretentiously possession. Miriam Osterrieders’ voice is much more present and smelts the sentiment between pop and ambient into just wonderful songs. Verses like „the code is clear / the child is safe / we leave the nerds / inside / their caves” may reveal a little about how prudent the album is. Just not kitsch, but its complete antithesis! Console have already caused quite a stir with their releases for different labels like the major Virgin as well as for seminal indies like Payola and Matador (e.g. the Singles “14 Zero Zero“ and “Freiburg V.3.0“, the records “Rocket In The Pocket”, “Reset The Preset”). They did a live album (“Live At Centre Pompidou“), several radio plays as well as collaborations with Björk, Tocotronic and Depeche Mode. After „Mono“ (2006) and the re-release of the debut „Pan-or-ama“ the new album „Herself“ is another step in Console’s band history on Disko B. The new Console release „Herself“ will be performed live - including the whole band setup - for two exclusive shows in Munich and Berlin in late November.

On the second ‘Shapes’ compilation of 2010, Tru Thoughts label boss Rob Louis treats your ears to a whooping 30 tracks from across the label’s roster. The two disk collection includes more previously unreleased, limited and exclusive cuts than ever.
Among the exclusive tracks are Quantic’s remix of Saravah Soul; Smerin’s Anti Social Club doing a great reggae Dr Who; and Stonephace (feat. Adrian Utley from Portishead) making a psychedelic jazz monster out of a Micky Finn rave classic. New signing Maddslinky (aka Zed Bias) makes a few appearances including “Further Away”, which was voted in the Top 5 tunes of 2009 in Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide awards. CD One starts on a reggae tip with the skanky sounds of Quantic’s Flowering Inferno, Prince Fatty, Alice Russell and Lanu. It then moves into more soulful territory with a track from Nostalgia 77’s upcoming album, through to the cinematic soundscapes of Hidden Orchestra, whose debut album, “Night Walks” was “BBC1 Introducing’s” Album of the Month in Scotland.
CD Two is a little more focused on the dancefloor with Randomer’s remix of the Bamboos, AtJazz remixing Maddslinky: a couple of exclusives from Flevans and some hard beats from Benjamin One.
